Slack in Roma

Catch up on a channel, search messages, and post as yourself when you ask.

Connect Slack and your operator can find a channel, catch you up on it, search your workspace's messages and look up who someone is. When you ask, it posts a message to a channel under your own name, and it shows you the message first. Roma adds nothing to your workspace, so nothing posts unless you ask.

What the operator does in Slack

Noor comes back from two days off and asks "Catch me up on #product since Monday". The operator finds the channel, reads its history and tells her what moved. "What did the team say about the launch date?" searches messages across the workspace. "Who is Sam in our workspace?" looks the person up. The replies in a thread can be read too, and "which channels am I in?" lists them.

"Tell #design the mocks are up" drafts the message and shows a card naming the channel and the text, the card described in Approvals. When she approves, it posts, as her, from her account. In Slack it reads as a message she typed.

An automation can read Slack but never posts. "Scan #support every morning and list what needs an answer" works as a morning run. "Post the summary to #team" ends as a draft that you send from a conversation. More in What an automation is.

What it sees, and what it never does

Slack connects Roma as you. The operator sees what you can see, direct messages included, and posts under your name. The one action that reaches other people, sending a message, asks first unless you set Sending to Always allow on the connection's page. Roma has no presence of its own in the workspace: no slash commands, no mentions, nothing that answers or posts on its own. The operator never deletes or edits a message and never creates or renames a channel. A channel's history is summarised in its answer and never copied into Roma.

How to connect

Open Settings → Connections and press Slack. Sign in with Slack in the window that opens, choose the workspace, allow the access it lists, and close the page when it says Connected. The row carries a green check, and its page shows two permission groups: Reading, always allowed, and Sending, which asks first. One workspace per connection. The iPhone's Settings → Connections carries the same row. The general steps are in Connect an app to Roma, and the public page is /connections/slack.

How to disconnect

Settings → Connections, press Slack, then Disconnect. Roma's access ends at once. Messages it posted stay in Slack as yours.

Questions people ask

Does Roma post in Slack by itself?

No. A post happens when you ask for one in a conversation, and the card shows the channel and the text before it goes out. An automation can read channels for you but never posts.

Does Roma show up in my workspace as an app?

No. Roma installs nothing in the workspace. It acts through your own account, so a message it posts for you reads as one you typed, under your name.

Which channels can it read?

The ones you can read yourself, and your direct messages. Ask for a channel by name and the operator finds it, or ask which channels you are in.

Can it search older messages?

Yes. Searching messages uses Slack's own search with your account's reach, so what you can find in Slack, the operator can find too.
