Reddit and X in Roma
Read a thread or a post into a note, and post on Reddit when you ask.
Reddit and X are two connections for the public web's conversations. Reddit connects with your own account: the operator reads and searches, and posts or comments under your username when you ask, always asking first, because a Reddit post is public the instant it is made. X is included with Roma: there is no X sign-in, the operator reads public posts with Roma's own access, and it never writes there.
Reddit: what the operator does
Sam asks "What are the running subreddits saying about carbon plates this week?" The operator searches across subreddits, reads the threads and answers with links. "Keep the useful comments as a note" saves them on his Notes list. It can also search across Reddit or within one subreddit, read a post and its comments, read a subreddit's rules and its post flairs, and look up an account's profile. "What has that account posted?" is a search by author.
"Post this to the subreddit" shows a card with the subreddit, the title and the text, and the post goes up under your username when you approve. A comment and an edit ask the same way. Before posting into a subreddit, the operator can read that subreddit's rules.
Reddit: what asks first, and what it never does
Every write on Reddit asks first, because Reddit has no drafts and no private state. A post or a comment exists publicly, under your name, the moment it is made, and an edit is as immediate. Deleting a post or a comment asks too, and it is permanent: Reddit keeps no trash, and a deleted post leaves its title on an otherwise empty page. The operator never votes and never acts as a moderator. You can set Sending or Deleting to Always allow on the connection's page, and the default is to ask.
X: reading public posts, with no sign-in
X is included with Roma. Its row in Settings → Connections shows a green check from the start, with no sign-in behind it, and reads Enable X when it is off. The operator reads public posts with Roma's own access: "What has the Northwind account posted this week?", "find posts mentioning @northwind since Monday", "the top posts about ferries this month". A read covers posts by an account, posts with words, phrases or mentions, in a window you set, newest or top, up to 60 posts at a time. Replies are left out when you watch an account and kept when you search words or mentions, and reposts are left out. "Keep the useful ones as a note" lands them on your Notes list with their links.
An automation can watch X. "Every Monday, collect what the three accounts posted last week" reads from where the previous run stopped. The operator never posts to X and never likes, follows or bookmarks: those would need your X password handed to another service, and Roma does not ask for it.
How to connect, and how to stop
Reddit: open Settings → Connections and press Reddit. Sign in with Reddit in the window that opens, allow the access it lists, and close the page when it says Connected. The row carries a green check, and its page shows Reading, Sending and Deleting. To stop, press Reddit, then Disconnect. Your posts stay on Reddit. The public page is /connections/reddit.
X: there is nothing to connect. Its page in Settings → Connections has a Disable button and one line: Included with Roma. It does not use your X account. Disable it and Roma stops reading X in chat and in automations. Enable X on the row turns it back on. The public page is /connections/x.
On the iPhone both rows are in Settings → Connections too. The general steps are in Connect an app to Roma.
Questions people ask
Can Roma post to X for me?
No. Roma reads public posts on X and writes nothing there. Posting would need your X sign-in handed to another service, which Roma does not ask for.
Will a Reddit post go out without my approval?
Not by default. A post, a comment, an edit and a delete each show a card and wait for you. Only when you set Sending or Deleting to Always allow on Reddit's page does one run on its own.
Does X need my X account?
No. X is included with Roma, reads public posts with Roma's own access, and is on unless you disable it.
Can I undo a Reddit delete?
No. Reddit keeps no trash, so a deleted post or comment is gone, which is why a delete always shows a card first.
