Roma on your iPhone

Your lists and your operator on the phone, a press of a button away.

Roma on your iPhone is the same account, the same lists and the same operator as on your Mac, in an app built for the phone: a press of the Action Button talks to the operator, widgets put your tasks on the Home Screen and the Lock Screen, and anything you share from another app lands in the operator's chat bar.

Getting it

Install Roma from the App Store at https://apps.apple.com/app/id6762153252 and sign in with Apple or Google. A brand-new account opens on the operator's greeting, so the first thing you see is the first thing to do. An account you already have opens on your Tasks tab with your lists already there. Install Roma on your iPhone has the steps.

The Tasks tab

The app opens on the Tasks tab: your Tasks list as one flat list under its saved sort, compact rows by default, with the status, the title and the due pill on each. The plus at the top right opens the New task row with the keyboard up. Return creates the task, and it holds the top of the list for two minutes. Swipe a task to delete it. Hold a task still and its menu opens. Hold and move and you are dragging it to a new place, which sets the list to your manual order.

The settings menu behind the sliders holds Rows (Full size or Compact), Sort and Show completed, and under them the list's own settings: Edit list and favorites on Tasks, and on every other list Archive list and Delete list too. Every other list has the same page. Tap a task to view it: the body, its properties as pills, and a Chat about pill at the bottom that opens its conversation with the operator. The Tasks tab goes deeper.

Tasks is the one tab that always stays. The operator has a tab of its own, and Settings → Navigation lets you arrange the rest of the bar.

The Action Button

Assign Talk to Roma to the Action Button in your iPhone's Settings and a press opens the operator with the microphone already live, in the conversation you were last in. Say what you need and send. In Roma's Settings → Action Button you choose whether a press opens with the microphone or the keyboard, and whether a take sends itself after three seconds of silence.

Switch on Talk without opening Roma and the press never opens the app at all: Roma listens from the Dynamic Island, you say what you need, you press the Action Button again to send, and the operator answers with a notification. Noor is in the supermarket with both hands full of bags, presses the button, says "remind me to defrost the chicken tonight at six", presses again, and goes on shopping. The reminder arrives at six. The Action Button covers each setting.

"Talk to Roma" and "Ask Roma" also work as Siri phrases, and the same shortcut appears in the Shortcuts app on its own.

Widgets, the Lock Screen and Controls

The Tasks widget shows your tasks on the Home Screen and on the Lock Screen, drawn from the list you pick and sorted the way the app sorts them. Two Lock Screen circles, New task and Talk to Roma, sit under the clock. The same two are Controls for Control Center, the Lock Screen's bottom slots and the Action Button's own list. The widget's microphone opens the operator with a live take, the same way the button does. Widgets, the Lock Screen and Controls shows how to add each.

Sharing into Roma

Roma is in the share sheet of every app. Share a photo, a link or a piece of text and it lands in the operator's chat bar, ready for you to add a word and send: a screenshot of a receipt, a listing from the browser, a message from a chat. Share to Roma from any app explains what happens next.

Voice

The microphone in the chat bar takes dictation on any conversation. Settings → AI and Dictation → Dictation chooses when the words appear: Live, as you speak, or After recording, once you stop, which is the default and the more accurate of the two. Voice and dictation on the iPhone has the detail.

Offline and in sync

The app keeps a local copy of your lists, so it opens at once and works without a connection: you can add, edit, complete, move and reorder, and it syncs when you are back. Only the operator and the background cleanup need the network. A change you make on the Mac shows on the phone within moments, and the other way round.

Questions people ask

Does Roma work on an iPad?

Roma is an iPhone app. It installs and runs on an iPad in the iPhone compatibility mode, but there is no iPad layout of its own.

Do I need to open the app to add a task?

No. With Talk without opening Roma switched on, the Action Button records from the Dynamic Island and a second press sends it. The New task Control and the Lock Screen circle open the New task row directly, and the share sheet sends anything from another app.

Will the phone buzz for every task?

No. A reminder is sent when a task has a time, either because you stated one or set a reminder. A task with a bare day stays quiet. Settings → Notifications on the phone holds the switches for everything else that may reach you.
