Stop sharing, or leave something shared with you
End a share you own, or leave one you joined, and what each does.
Stop sharing ends a share you own: the public link stops working, everyone who was invited or joined loses access, and you keep the thing as it is. Leaving is the other side: you take yourself off something somebody shared with you. Nothing is deleted either way, and a share can be started again at any time.
Where Stop sharing is
Stop sharing lives in the share dialog's footer and nowhere else: never in the ⋯ menu, the right-click menu or the long-press menu of a task or a list, and never in a list's settings menu. It is offered only while the thing has a share of its own, and hovering it reads "Removes everyone and turns the link off."
Stop sharing a task or a note
The confirm asks "Stop sharing this?" and says what follows: "The link will stop working and everyone who was invited or joined will lose access to it. Their chat messages stay in your copy of the conversation, and you can share it again at any time."
When you confirm, link sharing is disabled, every member is removed, pending invitations are withdrawn, and the shared conversation closes. You keep the task as it is, the members' edits included. Sharing it again later opens a fresh conversation and a fresh link. In the browser and in the Mac app the dialog closes after the confirm. On the iPhone the sheet stays open and settles in front of you: the banner reads private again, the people go, and the link section offers Create public link once more.
Stop sharing a list
A list's confirm reads "Stop sharing this list?" with "The link will stop working and everyone who was invited or joined will lose access to the list and to every item inside. You can share it again at any time." Everyone leaves the list and everything inside it. An item inside that also had a share of its own keeps that one. Your private conversation about the list from before sharing comes back.
A task inside a shared list
A task that is shared by its list and also on its own has two shares, and Stop sharing in its own dialog ends its own alone: "Stop sharing this task on its own?" Its link stops working and the people invited to it directly lose access, while the list's members keep it and the shared conversation stays. A task with nothing of its own offers no Stop sharing, because its share is the list's and is stopped on the list.
Removing one person, or turning the link off
To remove one person, open the share dialog and pick Remove at the foot of their level dropdown. They lose access at once, and their invitation is withdrawn with them, so they do not come back the next time they sign in. To end the public link alone, pick Disable link sharing: everyone who came in through the link is removed, and the people you invited keep their access.
Deleting and archiving
Deleting a shared task or a shared list ends its share first, and the people in it lose access the way they do on Stop sharing. Restoring it from the trash brings it back private, and you share it again if you want to. Deleted tasks, notes and lists stay recoverable for about 30 days. Archiving a shared task does not end the share: members keep access, and Shared with me hides it for them.
Leaving something shared with you
In the browser and in the Mac app, leaving is one click with no confirmation: Leave task, Leave item or Leave list in the thing's ⋯ menu, and for a list on its row under Shared with me too. A Full access member also finds Leave in the footer of the share dialog. On the iPhone, Leave asks first. "Leave this task?" says "It will be removed from your lists. You can join again with the link, and nothing you wrote is deleted." "Leave this list?" says "The list and every item in it will be removed from your lists. You can join again with the link, and nothing you wrote is deleted."
Nothing is deleted when you leave. The link lets you back in, while the old invitation does not put you back on its own. A member cannot leave one item of a shared list: they leave the list, and everything inside goes with it.
When your access ends
When the owner removes you or stops sharing, the thing disappears from your devices at once. It leaves Shared with me, an open view falls back to your Tasks page, and the chat is gone for you. One quiet line lands in Updates, "Your access ended", which opens nothing, and nothing buzzes. The owner, in turn, is told when people join or leave what they shared, under People joining or leaving in Settings → Notifications.
Questions people ask
Do people lose what they wrote when I stop sharing?
No. Their edits to the title and the body stay in your task, and their chat messages stay in your copy of the conversation. You keep everything as it stood the moment you stopped.
Can I share the same task again later?
Yes, at any time. Sharing it again opens a fresh shared conversation and a fresh public link. The earlier shared conversation stays in your history, marked Private, and nobody who was in it before can reach it.
If I leave, can I come back?
Yes. The public link joins you again whenever you open it, and the owner can invite you again by email. The invitation you accepted before does not put you back on its own.
Can a member delete a task I shared with them?
Not a task shared with them on its own: deleting and archiving stay with the owner, and a member leaves instead. Inside a shared list it is different: everyone in the list archives and deletes items inside it, while the list itself is the owner's to delete.
