Show, hide and arrange properties
One order and one switch per property decide what every view shows.
Every list keeps one order of its properties and one switch per property that shows or hides it. Together they decide what you see on every row, in every item's detail and in the table, on the Mac, in the browser and on your iPhone. Change the order or hide a property in one place, and every view follows.
Arrange the order
The order is the list's own. Drag a row in List settings to move a property, the title's row included. On the Mac and in the browser you can also drag a column's header in the table, or a pill at the top of an item's detail, and the same order changes. On your iPhone, List settings has Reorder properties as well.
A new list starts with the title first. Every list also carries an ID property, which stands first, ahead of the title, until you move it. Wherever properties appear, they appear in this one order: the pills on a row, the pills in an item's detail, the columns of the table, and the lists of properties in the sort and filter menus.
Show or hide a property
Each property's row in List settings has an eye. Press it and the property hides, press it again and it shows. On the Mac and in the browser, View settings → Properties holds the same switches, and a column's menu in the table offers Hide.
A hidden property leaves every view at once: the rows, the item's detail and the table. Its values stay on the items, and showing it again brings them back.
The title hides like any other property. Hidden, the title leaves the rows and its column leaves the table. The item's detail keeps the title at the top, since that is where you type an item's name. The title is never deleted, only hidden, and the operator always knows it as each item's title, whatever you call it.
Three properties Roma adds for you follow the same switch. The ID and Created by start hidden. Assigned to, which Roma adds to a list of tasks the first time you share it, starts shown. Show or hide any of them like the properties you added yourself.
What each view shows
Full-size rows. Every shown property that holds a value, as a pill, in the list's order. A property with nothing in it shows no pill, so a task with no due date has no due date pill.
Compact rows. On the Mac and in the browser, the same pills on one line, with the status icon before the title. On your iPhone a compact row keeps the status icon, the title and the due date, to fit the screen.
The item's detail. Every shown property, in the same order as the row. An empty one shows its name in muted ink, so you can fill it in from there.
The table. Every shown property is a column, and an empty value is a blank cell.
The board. The same cards as the list's rows, compact or full size.
The Tasks page. When it shows tasks from all your lists, each task follows its own list's order and switches.
Row size is set under View settings → Rows. On the Mac and in the browser it is saved on the list. On your iPhone each list keeps its own row size on the phone, and Settings → General → Tasks → Rows sets the size for every list that has none of its own.
On a shared list
On a list someone shared with you, or one you shared, what you hide and the order you see start as your own view. Nobody else's rows change. On the Mac and in the browser, Save for everyone writes your view onto the list for every person on it. Working together on a shared list covers the rest.
More about the kinds of properties is in properties, and the three layouts are in list, board and table layouts.
Questions people ask
Why do I not see a property on a row?
A row shows a pill only for a property that holds a value on that item. Open the item, and its detail shows every shown property, an empty one in muted ink. If the property is missing there too, it is hidden: press its eye in List settings.
Can I hide the title?
Yes. Press the eye on the title's row in List settings, or hide its column in the table. The rows and the table stop showing it, the item's detail keeps it at the top, and you can show it again at any time. The title is never deleted.
Does hiding a property delete its values?
No. Hiding only changes what you see. The values stay on every item, and they come back the moment you show the property again.
Does my iPhone follow the order I set on the Mac?
Yes. The order and the switches are the list's, so the iPhone shows the same properties in the same order. Its compact rows are the one exception, with the status icon, the title and the due date alone.
