AI editing: how much the operator rewrites

Level, Voice and a clean-up switch decide how far Roma tidies your words.

After you capture something, Roma tidies it in the background: a clean title, a tidied body, the due date pulled out of the words, and the whole thing filed onto the list you named. AI Editing is where you decide how far that tidying goes. It changes the form of what you said, never the facts, and it never shortens away a point you made.

What the pass does

Nearly everything you make gets the same pass a moment after it lands. The title comes out clean, starting with a verb and carrying no date. The body is tidied to the level you chose, and anything that reads as a step inside it becomes a real checklist you can tick. A date or a time in the words becomes the due date. Your text stays in the language you wrote it in and is never translated. The pass only cleans up, so a word you said is never lost, whatever the settings, and nothing you captured is split into several tasks on its own.

Mara dictates on the way to work: "so I need to call the dentist about the thing on Thursday and also pick up the prescription on the way back". With the settings on their defaults, the task is called Call the dentist, it is due Thursday, and its body keeps her two points as a checklist, in her words.

Level

Level decides how much the body is rewritten. The three choices, with the words Settings uses for them:

  • Light. Fixes typos, spelling and grammar only. Keeps your structure and wording.

  • Standard. Reshapes rambling notes into clear, readable sentences and paragraphs. This is the default.

  • Synthesize. Merges and condenses into the tightest faithful record. It drops filler, never a real point.

With Mara's capture above, Light keeps her sentence almost as spoken with the slips fixed. Standard turns it into two clear lines. Synthesize keeps the dentist, Thursday and the prescription and nothing else.

Voice

Voice decides whose voice the body reads in:

  • Keep my voice. Keeps your first-person voice, your deliberation and your thought process. This is the default.

  • Neutral. An impersonal, declarative record, with no first person and no rhetorical questions.

Level and Voice change the form of what you dictate and never the facts in it. A note that weighs two options in your own words stays a note that weighs two options, shorter or longer by the level, in the first person or not by the voice.

Clean up what I type

A task you type into a list's New task row, or an item typed into any other list, gets a lighter touch, decided by one switch. Clean up what I type is on by default and does three things to a typed item: it tidies the title, reads the due date out of the words, and fills the list's properties from them, on every list. Switch it off and every title stays exactly as you typed it, on every list. More on typing a task in create a task.

The same choice exists per list. Open a list's settings and choose Edit list, and the switch reads Clean up new tasks on the Tasks list or Clean up new items on any other list. Off on either the account or the list, Roma leaves what you typed alone there. Beside it sits Assist with new tasks, which decides whether the operator starts its first turn on a task the moment you create it. Switch that off on a list where you add many small items and want them added quietly. That first turn is described in the conversation on a task or note.

Where to find it

On the Mac and in the browser, open Settings. AI Editing is a section of the General page, with Clean up what I type, Level and Voice as its three rows. On the iPhone, the same three rows are under Settings in the card called AI and Dictation, which also holds the Dictation row that decides when spoken words appear. That row belongs to talking to Roma with your voice. The settings follow your account, so a choice made on the iPhone is what the Mac uses.

Questions people ask

Will Roma change what I meant?

No. The pass changes the form of what you said and never the facts: it fixes, reshapes or condenses, and it never drops a real point or invents one. The lower the Level, the less is changed, and Light touches nothing but typos, spelling and grammar.

Can I keep exactly what I typed?

Yes. Switch off Clean up what I type in AI Editing and every typed title stays as typed on every list, or switch it off for one list in Edit list. A dictated capture still gets the pass at the Level you chose.

What are the defaults?

Level is Standard, Voice is Keep my voice, and Clean up what I type is on. Nothing you said is ever lost at any setting.

Does AI Editing apply to notes as well as tasks?

Yes. The section is titled "How Roma edits tasks and notes you dictate", and a note gets the same pass: a tidied body at your Level, in the Voice you chose, with its steps as a checklist.
