Tabs
Every tab is its own place, with its own history, pins and shortcuts.
Roma has tabs the way a browser does: a strip across the top of the window, beside the sidebar toggle and the back and forward chevrons, in the Mac app and in the browser alike. Each tab is a place of its own with its own history, so back in one tab never lands you on another tab's content, and your tabs come back when you open Roma again.
What a tab holds
One of four things:
A New tab. The operator's home: the composer in the middle of the window over one card, your Recents once you have more than ten things. Nothing has been typed into it yet.
The conversation. A New tab you talk into becomes the Operator tab and shows your one conversation.
A task, note, item, automation or expert, open over its list or its page.
A page: Tasks, Home, Lists, or one list's page.
Open, close, come back
The + at the end of the strip, or ⌘T, opens a New tab. It lands on the operator's home with no caret placed, so a stray keystroke never starts a chat: click into the composer when you want to talk.
⌘W closes the tab you are in. ⌘⇧T brings back the last one you closed in this session.
Hold ⌘ and click a row, a sidebar entry or a link inside a body, or middle-click it, and it opens in a new tab behind the one you are in. Open in new tab in a right-click menu does the same. In ⌘K, ⌘Enter opens the row in a new tab and takes you there.
A page or a task already open in another tab is never opened twice: click Tasks in the sidebar while a tab shows it and that tab comes forward.
⌘1 to ⌘8 jump to a tab by its position, ⌘9 to the last one. ⌃Tab and ⌃⇧Tab cycle through them, ⌘⌥← and ⌘⌥→ step to the neighbour.
Right-click a tab for Pin tab, Close tab and Close other tabs.
Keyboard shortcuts and the command palette lists every chord in one place.
Back and forward live in the tab
⌘[ and ⌘], and the two chevrons, walk the history of the tab you are in. Opening a task over its list is one step, and back closes the task. Opening a task from the conversation is a step in that tab. A tab keeps about fifty steps.
Pinned tabs
Right-click a tab and choose Pin tab. Pinned tabs gather at the front of the strip, in a block you can reorder among themselves, and a pinned tab is frozen to what it shows. A click that would replace its content opens a new tab right after the pinned block instead, or switches to the tab already showing that destination, and the pinned tab stays as it was. A sort or a filter you change on a pinned Tasks tab stays in place, because it is the same view. ⌘W will not close a pinned tab: unpin it first.
Mara pins Tasks and the operator. Every task she opens from Tasks lands in a tab of its own after the two, and both are exactly where she left them when she comes back.
Tabs come back
Roma remembers your tabs, their order, their histories and the active one on this device, and restores them when you open the app again. A link you open while Roma is closed, a share link for instance, opens as its own tab beside the restored ones, unless a tab already shows it. On the first launch on a new device Roma opens on Tasks, with the operator open beside it.
Where a new thing lands
⌘N and the sidebar's New task open the New task row on the Tasks page, in the tab you are in, so a new task never costs a tab. A new automation or a new expert opens in a tab of its own, in front, because you are about to say what it is.
Questions people ask
Do tabs work in the browser too?
Yes. The strip, the pins, the restore and the right-click menu are the same at roma.app. Where your browser keeps a chord for itself, the strip's own + and close do the job.
Why did clicking Tasks switch tabs instead of opening Tasks here?
Because another tab already showed Tasks, and Roma never opens the same page twice. The tab that has it comes forward. Open it in a new tab on purpose with ⌘ and a click, and the same rule holds: the tab that already shows it is the one you get.
Can I have the same task open in two tabs?
No. A task already open in another tab is switched to rather than opened again, which keeps one task from being edited in two places at once.
What does a New tab open on?
The operator's home: the composer, with your Recents under it once you have more than ten things, and nothing else. Type into it and the tab becomes the Operator tab with your conversation. Open a task from there and the task takes the tab, with the conversation moving into the rail beside it, the way the conversation on a task or note always sits beside its subject.
