Keyboard shortcuts and the command palette
Every chord on the Mac and in the browser, and ⌘K for everything else.
Every shortcut in Roma is a chord with a modifier key, so none of them can fire while you type, and every action has exactly one. The whole list is under Settings → Shortcuts, one row per action. ⌘K opens the command palette, which reaches everything else by name: every page, every task, every list, every action. The chords are the same in the Mac app and in the browser at roma.app, except the few a browser keeps for itself, ⌘N among them.
Moving around
⌘K opens the command palette.
⌘O shows or hides the operator.
⌘\ shows or hides the sidebar.
⌘[ and ⌘] go back and forward inside the tab you are in.
⌘↑ and ⌘↓ go to the previous or next list: Home, Tasks, then every list in the sidebar's order.
⌘F finds in the page (the Mac app).
⌘Q quits (the Mac app asks first).
⌃⌥N opens quick chat from any app (the Mac app, and yours to change).
Tabs have a set of their own: ⌘T opens one, ⌘W closes it, ⌘⇧T brings back the last one closed, ⌘1 to ⌘8 jump to a tab and ⌘9 to the last, ⌘⌥← and ⌘⌥→ step to the neighbour, ⌃Tab and ⌃⇧Tab cycle. Tabs explains what each one does.
Tasks and items
⌘N opens the New task row at the top of your Tasks list with the caret in it, from anywhere in the app. On another list's page it opens that list's New item row. Enter creates the task, Enter again opens it with the caret in its body. Browsers reserve ⌘N, so this one is the Mac app's.
⌘S sets the status, ⌘D the due date and ⌘P the list, on the task that is open or the ones selected. The picker opens right there when the list has that property. ⌘P is Move to: pick a list and the task moves.
⌘↵ sends what you typed in the composer.
⌘A selects every row on a list's page. ⌘⌫ deletes the selected ones, after one question.
⌘Z and ⌘⇧Z undo and redo your last change to a task or a list. Inside a text field the chord is the field's own undo. Version history and undo covers what is recorded.
↑ and ↓ move along a list, ⇧↑ and ⇧↓ extend the selection, Enter opens the row, Esc clears the selection.
Hold ⌘ and click a row, or middle-click it, to open it in a new tab behind the one you are in.
In the body of a task or a note, ⌘⇧↑ and ⌘⇧↓ move the paragraph or list item you are in up or down.
The command palette: ⌘K
The palette is one search over everything you can reach and everything you have. Type, and one list ranks the matches: pages, actions, your tasks, items, experts, automations and lists by name, and your conversation with the operator by what was said in it. It forgives a typo and takes an abbreviation, so "proroa" finds Product roadmap and "qbr" finds Quarterly Business Review. Enter opens the row. ⌘Enter, or ⌘ and a click, opens it in a new tab and takes you there.
Before you type, the palette shows Recent, the seven things you were just at, and the actions for where you stand. A task you completed stays findable for eight hours, marked as done, so you can get back to what you just finished. Search in Roma describes the search itself.
What the thing in front of you offers, the palette offers too, in the same words as its menu:
Item actions on the open or selected task or item: Add to favorites, Set status, Set due date, Remind me, Move, Set a property, Copy link, Archive, Delete. With several selected, each applies to all of them ("Delete 3 tasks").
View on the list you stand in: Layout, Sort by, Group board by, Show completed, Compact or Full rows, Reset view. Type "sort" on the Tasks page and the sort row is first.
List actions: Edit list, Copy link, the favorite, Archive list, Delete list.
Automation actions on an automation's page: Run now, Pause or Resume, Delete.
Go to: every page, every list, every Settings page.
Theme: switch the appearance.
Inside the palette, Enter or → steps into a sub-page (the statuses, the dates, the lists), Backspace or ← steps back out, Esc closes it, and 1 to 9 picks an option by its number.
Questions people ask
Why is there no single-letter shortcut, like a bare C to create?
Because a bare letter has to guess whether you are typing, and the guess fails somewhere: a menu, a dialog, a date field. A chord cannot collide with typing, so every Roma shortcut is one. ⌘K and a word is the fast way to anything without a chord of its own.
Can I change a shortcut?
Two are yours to set, under Settings → Shortcuts: the quick chat hotkey and the hold to talk trigger, both described in Quick chat and hold to talk. The rest are fixed, one per action, so the same muscle memory works on every Mac and in the browser.
Which shortcuts work in the browser?
All of them, except the chords your browser keeps for itself. ⌘N is one: in the browser, create a task from the New task row or through ⌘K. ⌃⌥N and ⌘F are the Mac app's own.
How do I set a due date on several tasks at once?
Select them (⌘A for every row, ⇧ and a click for a range, or a rectangle dragged over empty space), then ⌘D. The due date page offers today, tomorrow, the end of the week and in a week, a Custom date, and Remove due date while any of them has one. The same works with ⌘S for the status and ⌘P for the list. Due dates, times and reminders explains what a due date does.
